Dr. Mandelbaum spent his adult life practicing ophthalmology in Brooklyn, New York. In his early years he was active in research in the field of dark adaptation. He is, however, best known in academic circles for the “Mandelbaum effect” which proves that visual accommodation is a reflex and not a voluntary act.

He was married for over 50 years, and he and his wife, Hattie, were both active in the mental health field, pioneering programs for autistic children. He leaves behind three offspring. He was an avid travel photographer, and this is reflected in the selections shown here.
